Thai script (อักษรไทย) is the writing system used for the Thai language. It was developed in the 13th century during the Sukhothai period, traditionally attributed to King Ramkhamhaeng. It evolved from earlier Old Khmer scripts, which themselves trace back to ancient Brahmic writing systems of India. Unlike simple alphabets, Thai is an abugida, meaning consonants carry an inherent vowel sound that can be modified using vowel marks placed above, below, before, or after the base letter.

One of the most distinctive features of Thai is its tonal nature. The language has five tones, and tone is partially encoded through a combination of consonant class, vowel length, and tone marks. This makes the script tightly bound to pronunciation, where small written changes can completely alter meaning.

Thai is used in nearly all written communication in Thailand, including literature, signage, media, government documents, and digital communication. It does not use spaces between words in traditional writing, instead relying on spacing to mark clauses or phrases. This gives written Thai a continuous flowing appearance.

The script consists of 44 consonants, multiple vowel symbols, and several tone markers. Consonants are grouped into classes that affect tonal pronunciation rules rather than phonetic sound alone. Vowels are not standalone characters but are combined around consonants, making Thai visually and structurally unique among world scripts.

In modern usage, Thai remains deeply tied to cultural identity and formal expression. While informal communication sometimes incorporates Latin script for technology or slang, Thai script remains the primary and dominant written system across all domains.
