Devanagari

Devanagari is a writing system used for several languages of South Asia, including Hindi, Sanskrit, Marathi, and Nepali. It belongs to the Brahmic family of scripts and evolved from earlier scripts such as Brahmi through intermediate forms like Gupta and Nagari, reaching its modern standardized form between the 7th and 11th centuries CE.

The Devanagari writing system is an abugida, meaning each consonant carries an inherent vowel sound (typically a) that can be modified or suppressed using vowel signs and diacritics. Independent vowel letters are used when vowels occur at the beginning of a syllable.

The modern Devanagari script contains approximately 14 vowels and 33 consonants, along with numerous compound characters formed through conjunct consonants and ligatures. Additional signs such as the virama (्) are used to cancel the inherent vowel, enabling precise representation of consonant clusters.

Devanagari is written from left to right and is widely used in education, literature, government, religious texts, and digital communication across India and Nepal. It is one of the most widely used writing systems in the world.

One of the most distinctive features of Devanagari is the horizontal headline known as the shirorekha, which runs across the top of letters and connects characters within a word. This creates a continuous visual line that distinguishes Devanagari from many other scripts.

Visually, Devanagari combines structured geometry with flowing curves and connected top lines. Characters are arranged into syllabic clusters, often stacking or merging to represent complex consonant combinations.
