noun — “your personal timezone… whether or not the rest of the planet agreed to it.”

Phase is hacker jargon for the position of a person's waking–sleeping cycle relative to the ordinary 24-hour day. Unlike a fixed schedule such as “morning person” or “night person,” phase treats sleep timing as something movable—a shifting offset that can drift, rotate, or occasionally collapse into chaos.

The term became especially useful in technical and hacker communities where work patterns often ignore conventional clock boundaries. Long coding sessions, overnight debugging, deployments, bursts of creativity, deadlines, or simply an absence of enforced schedules can gradually pull someone's sleep cycle away from local time.

Instead of asking:

"What time do you usually sleep?"

someone might ask:

"What's your phase?"

That wording treats sleep less like a habit and more like a position on a rotating clock.

A person's phase may shift gradually or dramatically. Among people with flexible schedules, changes of several hours per day are not unusual. Someone who has been sleeping at 2 A.M. may slowly drift toward 6 A.M., then noon, then evening, eventually circling back into alignment with local daytime.

Example:

"I've been getting in around 8 P.M. lately,
but I'm going to
wrap around
to day schedule by Friday."

This idea of wrap around treats the sleep cycle almost like modular arithmetic: instead of moving backward a few hours each day, it may feel easier to continue rotating forward until normal daylight reappears on the other side.

A person whose schedule sits roughly twelve hours opposite local convention is sometimes said to be operating in night mode. The less dramatic counterpart, day mode, usually refers to maintaining a relatively standard daytime rhythm—something like 9–5, though technical communities historically interpreted that with considerable flexibility.

The act of intentionally adjusting a schedule is called changing phase. Some groups also use the expression phase shifting, borrowing language from signal processing and physics as if sleep itself were another waveform to manipulate.

There are traditionally two recognized methods.

Change phase the hard way:

Stay awake for an unusually long period until the desired sleep window arrives.

// current schedule
sleep: 4 A.M.

// target schedule
sleep: 10 P.M.

// method:
remain awake → sleep later → reset

Change phase the easy way:

Extend sleep instead—sleep longer and attempt to emerge aligned with the target schedule.

Of course, opinions vary dramatically on which method is actually easier. Some people find extending wakefulness effortless but struggle to oversleep; others can sleep endlessly but find extended wake periods miserable. A common observation is that extending your day feels easier than shortening it.

Sudden forced phase changes can produce an experience similar to jet lag even without crossing a single timezone. The body notices that internal timing no longer matches external expectations and reacts accordingly: fatigue, alertness at strange hours, reduced concentration, and the vague feeling that time itself has become slightly incorrect.

Conceptually, phase is an unusually elegant piece of hacker vocabulary because it reframes sleep from morality into synchronization. You are not “late” or “early”—you are simply operating on a different offset. Whether that offset is sustainable… is another discussion.
